About Bologna

Bologna is Italy's oldest and most student packed city, anchored by the University of Bologna (founded 1088) plus the fine arts academy, conservatory and Johns Hopkins SAIS Europe, with a young, international and famously food loving vibe.

  • 🎓The original university townThe University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest in the world and gives the whole city its young energy.
  • 🍝Food is the local sportThis is the home of ragu, tortellini and mortadella, and aperitivo culture means a drink usually comes with snacks.
  • 🚲Compact and walkableAlmost everything is inside the porticoes, so you walk, cycle or grab a RideMovi instead of paying for transport.

Bologna is one of Italy's tighter student rental markets because demand from more than 90,000 students far outstrips supply, so start your search early. Most students rent a room in a shared flat, with single rooms averaging around €400 to €450 a month plus bills, cheaper in San Donato, Bolognina or Massarenti and pricier inside the centre. Many landlords prefer the Italian codice fiscale and proof of enrolment, so sort that out as soon as you arrive.
