About Berlin

Berlin is one of Europe's biggest student cities, home to Humboldt University (HU), the Freie Universitaet (FU), the Technische Universitaet (TU) and the Charite medical school, with a famously open, creative, anything-goes vibe.

Berlin used to be famous for cheap flats, but rents have climbed fast and the market is now genuinely tight, so start early. Most students rent a room in a WG (a shared flat), where you will pay roughly €450 to €650 a month depending on the area. Cheaper rooms turn up in Wedding, Lichtenberg and Marzahn, while Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg cost more. Always register your address (the Anmeldung) when you arrive, as you need it for almost everything here.
