About Lausanne

Lausanne is a compact lakeside university city, home to the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and the world class EPFL, with a young, international crowd split between the two campuses.

  • ⛰️The city is basically stairsLausanne is built on three hills, so the M2 metro doubles as a lift and you will feel every climb on foot.
  • 🏔️Lake and Alps on tapSwim or sail off Ouchy in summer and reach the ski slopes and Lavaux vineyards in under an hour by train.
  • 💸Switzerland is priceyRooms and beers cost more than most of Europe, so students sort housing early and budget hard, but wages and jobs pay well too.

Lausanne is one of Switzerland's pricier student cities and rooms go fast, so start hunting months before term. A room in a shared flat (a colocation) runs roughly CHF 600 to CHF 900 a month, and the university foundation FMEL runs cheaper student residences if you apply early. Many students live further west toward the campuses in Renens, Prilly or Ecublens, where rents drop and the M1 and trains still get you in fast.
