About Madrid

Madrid is one of Europe's biggest student cities, home to the Universidad Complutense (UCM), Universidad Autonoma (UAM), Carlos III, the Politecnica and a buzzing international crowd at IE University.

  • 💸Easier on the walletRent and pints are far kinder than Paris or London, and the under-26 travel pass is just 10 euros a month.
  • 🍷Tapas are a way of lifeOrder a drink in many bars and the free snack just turns up, so an evening out can cost almost nothing.

Madrid is more affordable than most European capitals, but rooms in the central and student areas still go fast before each semester, so start early. Most students rent a room in a shared flat, with the average around 500 euros a month and rising in trendy spots like Malasana and Chueca. Outlying districts such as Carabanchel and Vallecas are cheaper and still well connected by Metro. Always sign a proper contract and keep your padron (address registration) in order, you need it for plenty of paperwork here.
