Montreal is one of the more affordable big cities in Canada, but rents have climbed fast, so start early, especially before the famous 1 July moving day when half the city changes apartments. Most students rent a room in a shared flat or a studio, with the average student room landing around $800 a month. Leases usually run a year, and Quebec rules favour tenants, so read your lease and never feel rushed into signing on the spot.
